#28: Getting High

We published a new J Guide a few months ago, but I’m only just getting to journal about it.

The first one “Rolling”, was about putting a joint together.

This one, “Getting High”, is about the biology of how we get high.

It’s set in a smoke sesh with three friends. They pass the joint around and talk about the Endocannobinoid system.

Producing this episode was quite the learning experience, and it was so much easier. Tomiwa Ajiboye and I really learnt a lot from the first time around.

It went like this:

First, we wrote a script with references and all
Then, we curated a list of illustrators and settled on Bolu
Tomiwa did an intro and we exchanged emails
We sent a deposit for the storyboard

The storyboard came back in 3D and I was so floored!
I shared my feedback.
We refined and published on 4/20. To date, I haven’t met or had a conversation with Bolu, the illustrator. The entire thing was done via email and it was amazing.

I loved her process, communication and work ethic. She’s a fantastic illustrator and I hope to work with her again in future.

So, where’s my head at with J Guide?

Tomiwa Ajiboye and I will keep making new episodes, however randomly.

We learn so much from doing the research and it’s nice to work with a different illustrator for each one.

We experimented with some Instagram marketing recently but nothing much came out of it, probably because it wasn’t intentional.

Maybe when we get to 10 episodes, we’ll try some marketing again. Maybe even make some merch, who knows?

Compared to other stuff, J Guide has been pretty cheap to produce. I only have to pay the illustrator. Even Cover Stories, which might not be published, has cost more so far.

We’re still taking it one at a time and not thinking of a regular cadence. I think we should make 10 episodes for a start and then decide what to do with it.

The next story is about the beauty benefits of CBD. It’s a fascinating topic I’ve learnt a lot directing and hopefully, this interests more women.
