#20: A Retrospective of Album Covers

It’s been three months since we started this story and finally, I can see the end coming. To go over it again, the original idea was Afromusic, a story about the history of Nigerian pop. After some research I realised that was going to be a little hectic so we dropped it.

Soon enough, Eseosa Belo-Osagie brought up the idea to do a smaller story about album covers and we went with that instead.

The eventual idea was two-fold. First, we’d visit an old printing shop, talk to people, take pictures and document what we learn. Unfortunately, the two places we visited were gone and pursuing new leads was stressful, so I chose to do it in another issue.

Secondly, we planned to interview a few cover designers. I particularly wanted to speak to older artists and even got a few leads e.g. Temi Kogbe. I lazily tried to reach out but had so much anxiety about it that I gave up as soon as they didn’t respond. I chose peace of mind and decided to pursue people closer to me. I emailed Niyi Okeowo, Funto Coker and Duks and they agreed to a video call.

Issue 1 will be a compilation of those interviews + a mini app for browsing album covers by year or designer.
